First round: bye
23rd June: Newport 2-5 Bowdon
Newport travelled
to the neutral venue of Nottingham on a beautiful June day for this match against
Bowdon. In the morning games, Mike Porter and Andrew Gregory performed strongly
but a missed peg-out by Mike let the opponents back in. Thankfully, the punishment
was not severe as Martin Granger-Brown broke down during his attempted triple
peel and Andrew finished. Jim Potter and Arthur Flutter were less successful,
both losing their singles games for a 2-1 deficit at lunchtime.
In the afternoon, Mike was quickly defeated and despite a close victory for Andrew, Jim and Arthur also succumbed to defeat to make the final score 2-5.

12th June: Newport 4-1 Colchester
South (Report: Bernard
Yallop)
Arthur Flutter had a good day. He played Jane Collier in the morning, who is
always difficult to beat. Although she pegged him out she still could not win.
In the afternoon Arthur really showed that he could play croquet by beating
Nick Steiner by 26. The previous weekend Nick had won the three day Handicap
event at Colchester so he was in top form. Bernard Yallop started to play some
good croquet in the afternoon and eventually built up a safe lead on Jane Collier
with the aid of some corner cannons. Adrian Seabrook also played well by beating
John Williams who is always a worthy opponent.
