Newport CC has a thriving Golf Croquet section. A series of friendly matches is played through the season, as well as the (marginally) more serious business of the EACF Golf Croquet League - see the diary for details of fixtures.

16th November 2008: Soham Indoor Golf Croquet
Sunday November 16 saw two teams from Newport enter the Soham Indoor Golf Doubles Tournament. A difficulty encountered was that, due to a late cancellation from a team member, we were down to three people, and so it was suggested to us that rather than cancel a team we "borrow" somebody from another club, and this we did. Chris Howell from Bury St Edmunds joined us.

It was an early start with the first team (Newport) playing at 9.00 am. There were in all 6 teams in competition; 13 point games with timed play.
At the end of the day Newport made the 1st and 2nd spots, which, of course, left the members of the club to play off against each other! Team B (Clive Cassidy and Chris Howell) was the eventual winner over Team A (Pat and Tony Marks) with a score of 5-4. A closely fought contest.

Everybody enjoyed the day and is looking forward to the next indoor tournament, although Golf players will have to wait until March for that to occur!

Pictures from the event can be seen here.

14th September 2008: Hunstanton 49 Newport 29 (Roger Ivill Trophy)
Newport's annual match with Hunstanton took place in Norfolk this year. While the fixture is a combined association/golf day, illness and injury had decimated Newport's association croquet contingent and most of the games were therefore of golf croquet.

After all the rain that had occurred just before our visit, Sunday turned to be sunny although quite cold. Newport had a rather disastrous morning (new lawns always take some getting used to although that cannot be an excuse), but in the afternoon things evened out, although not enough to make up for the morning score. Final score Newport 29 (27 points Golf players, 2 points Association) Hunstanton 49.

8th August 2008: Colchester 10 Newport 8 (EACF League)
The day was intermittently sunny with occasional drizzle. The match was very close with, again, a poor first round and then a good catch up. Unfortunately we had given too much in the initial stages and the final score was Colchester 10 Newport 8.

30th July 2008: Bury St Edmunds vs Newport (Friendly)
July 30 found us at the Victory Sports Ground for a friendly match against Bury St Edmunds. The day was sunny and John Sibson turned out to be the man of the day with 5 wins. As always, apart from some good croquet, we were treated to some fine fare and friendly companionship. Thanks to Eileen Beattie for organizing the day for us.

14th July 2008: Social day
July 14 was a social afternoon of croquet followed by a BBQ organised by Adrian Seabrook. This was the first time this had been attempted and it was enjoyed by all. The weather was reasonably kind and it was great to chat and socialise with club members. Well done Adrian.

22nd May 2008: Newport 10 Sudbury 8 (EACF League)
Thursday 22 May turned out to be a day when the sun shone, which always makes things feel good.

Newport versus Sudbury was the order of the day and we rate Sudbury highly. Players for Sudbury were Paul Strover, Anton Church, Geoffrey Wilcocks and Bunty Dickison. For Newport, John Sibson, Clive Cassidy, Helen Manley and Pat Marks. Manager for the day, Tony Marks and Referee, David Manley.

The singles matches were very competitive and found Newport leading by 4 points but the team went off song in the doubles with Sudbury rallying to score 2 points. The final score Newport 10 Sudbury 8. Well done the team.

We look forward to our next league match which will be with Bury St Edmunds in June.

10th May 2008: B-Level Tournament

Sixteen entries to the Newport Croquet Club’s ‘B’ Class golf croquet tournament arrived for an early start from as far away as Watford, Colchester, Bury St Edmunds, Chelmsford, Downham Market and Norwich, together with three entries from Newport, on what was to be a beautifully sunny day.

Play began at 9.15am with a break for a cooked two course meal provided by the golf croquet playing ladies and wives.

The day ended at around 5.00pm. with prizes presented by Tony Marks, chairman of Newport Croquet Club and Manager of the day, who thanked everyone for their attendance and support, with special thanks to the ladies who supplied and served the delightful lunch.
